In the last few decades, the NHL has grown rapidly, as a result of the increasing talent pool in many parts of the world. Historically, Canada has been one of the top sources of NHL talent for yearly drafts, resulting in Blackhawk greats like Denis Savard, Tony Esposito, Jonathan Toews, etc.

In the last few years though, The United States has emerged as the fastest-growing market for growing talent for the NHL. Many colleges and universities in the NCAA along with development leagues throughout the United States have given the league a bigger source of talent to pull from.

Former Chicago Blackhawks superstar Patrick Kane is one of those talents and tonight after playing the Pittsburgh Penguins and winning 6-0 as a New York Ranger, he now has sole possession of the second place for most points from an American player.

These stats are important to commissioner Gary Bettman as it's been his mandate to grow the game in the United States from day one. Kane currently has 1234 points which surpassed Phil Housley with 1232.

It's mathematically possible for Kane to catch the leader Mike Modano who holds 1374 points. It'll just depend on how many more years Kane feels he's able to play.
