Former Blackhawks superstar Jonathan Toews was the last player to wear the captaincy for the Blackhawks. When General Manager Kyle Davidson and the ownership group decided to turn the page on that chapter of the franchise, they ushered in a new era led by Connor Bedard and several veteran players to round out the roster.
As all fans know, the head coach is the person who decides who wears the 'C' for the team, and it was announced today that Luke Richardson has chosen four players to wear the alternate captain this year.
Seth Jones and Connor Murphy will be wearing the primary alternate captain, while Nick Foligno and Corey Perry will rotate the third alternate captain honour. I feel this is a wise move not to name a captain this season, as he would probably like to see how Bedard handles his first season as an NHL superstar.
I also like the fact that Richardson acknowledges the players who have put time into the team and the veterans who have been brought in to help support Connor Bedard and the younger players, as this season will not be a successful one in the standings.
The Blackhawks will be on the road to start their season against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the game time will be 8:00 PM Eastern.
