Connor Bedard is projected to be the first overall selection in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Bedard is regarded as having the skills that could change the pace of a struggling franchise. With all of the hype surrounding Bedard, is he worthy of the number one pick?
Bedard is 17 years old and will be 18 by the start of the 2023-2024 NHL season. He stands 5'9» and weighs 181 pounds. Bedard most recently played with the Regina Pats of the WHL, where he was an alternate captain. Bedard put up insane numbers offensively, scoring 100 points in 62 games played. He had 51 goals and 49 assists.
Bedard also represented Canada the WJC, where he was the captain. Bedard had 7 points (6 goals and 1 assist) in 4 games played. Bedard has been well over a point per game player in every league he has stepped foot in. So far in his career up to this point, Bedard has 189 goals and 142 assists in 161 games.
In my opinion, Bedard has the skills to back up the hype surrounding him. He is great with puck handling, shooting accuracy, deking, passing, speed, and the list goes on. Of course there is no guarantee that a prospect will stick or successfully translate their game to the NHL level, but Bedard has a chance to be a truly special player in the NHL. Any team that will be in the position to draft him in 2023 will have a dynamic, cornerstone player to build their team around.
