Marc-Andre Fleury shoves the NHL's threats in their face with recent statement
Veteran goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, now with the Minnesota Wild, made waves by wearing a unique mask for Minnesota's Native American Heritage Night, defying NHL rules. The league initially objected, but Fleury's act turned into a positive story as the mask was auctioned for $35,100, with the proceeds going to a good cause.
Fleury explained:
«It's for a good cause, which is the main reason why I wanted to wear the mask. You can wear the mask for 15 minutes and raise a good bunch of money to help people. To me, I just thought it was the right thing to do."
The goalie, close to tying his idol Patrick Roy's career wins, downplayed the incident, saying:
«I've had four paint jobs on my masks this season, so I could have worn this mask all season, and nobody would say a thing. It's just such a small thing to do, but it meant so much to the people we're raising money for and the person, Cole (Redhorse Taylor), who designed it.»
Moreover, the Prairie Island Indian Community will match the mask's donation, supporting a charity chosen by Fleury.
This happened amid the NHL's restrictions on player expressions at the season's start, aiming to avoid controversies. Fleury's action highlights athletes using their influence for meaningful causes.
