The Blackhawks have six total Stanley Cups, and the first came in 1934....on April 10.
That's right, on this day in history, the Chicago Blackhawks, an original six team, won their first Stanley Cup. It was a double overtime victory versus their old foe, the Detroit Redwings.
Harold "Mush" March scored in the second overtime period to break the tie and win 1-0.
While we should definitely celebrate "Mush," we should not forget the true MVP- Chuck Gardiner. When fans think of their favorite all-time Blackhawks' goalies, the name Chuck Gardiner is not on their short list. He should be.
Gardiner was integral to the Hawks first Cup win. He played in great pain, suffering from an infection and extremely high temperature. He pitched multiple shutouts and is the only goalie captain on the Stanley Cup. Sadly, he wouldn't be able to enjoy for long. That summer, following the Cup run, he succumbed to the infection and died of a brain hemorrhage. He does not get the respect he deserves. On April 10th, Blackhawks fans should celebrate Chicago's first Stanley Cup and the exploits of a hero who died too soon.
