Eric Duhatshek of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that a Czech media source believes that the Edmonton Oilers have inquired about the former 30-goal scorer, which makes a lot of sense, given the Oilers' pursuit of playoff success.
A lot has been made of the fact that the Oilers have not done a good enough job of surrounding Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl with the necessary supporting pieces that would allow the Oilers to maximize the two young phenoms in their prime years. Adding a player of Kubalik's caliber could certainly lead to results when it matters for the snake-bitten franchise - though their most imminent need is still in the crease.
For the Hawks, this could be a good opportunity to try to pry away a young asset like Tyler Tullio or Raphael Lavoie along with a draft pick or two from an Oilers team who is desperate for success.
Kubalik has had a bit of a down year for the Hawks after posting 30 goals and 46 points in his rookie season in 2019-20. The Czech winger followed that up by scoring at a 25-goal pace last season, but this year he has managed just 10 goals and 19 points in 52 games for the Blackhawks.
A change of scenery could definitely benefit the 26-year-old, and a chance to play with two of the best players on the planet never hurt anyone either.
