This discussion was prompted by former Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov, who refused to wear a pride jersey during warm-up. According to Provorov, these beliefs went against his church, and he declined to wear them.
Once this was announced, other players began to come forward with their reservations about wearing pride colours, which led the NHL to ban all pride accessories from being visible on equipment.
It seems, however, that Travis Dermott, the former Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks defenseman, who signed with the Arizona Coyotes decided to challenge the league by displaying pride colours on his stick in a very discreet manner.
Dermott explained that he felt the small amount of tape would not go unnoticed by anyone. However, with so many cameras trained on the ice and the players and many fans and spotters watching the game, it was quickly discovered.
Now that this has happened, the NHL has responded by stating that they will review it and have not discussed what fines or discipline Dermott could face.
It's widely expected that these conversations and discussions regarding pride tape or pride merchandise in the NHL will not die down anytime soon.
I also expect other players to continue challenging the NHL regarding this subject, as many feel very strongly about supporting pride.
