Olczyk spent the last 16 seasons working alongside the legendary Pat Foley as the color analyst. With Olczyk joining his brother (assistant general manager) in Seattle, who should be rewarded with the opportunity to fill his shoes in the broadcast booth?
Early speculation on social media is that the Blackhawks will turn to a former player to fill the role. There are two former players I have in mind that would be a great fit. The first player is Patrick Sharp. Sharp has been a part of the NBC Chicago postgame and intermission shows for a little while now. Sharp is also an icon in Chicago, winning 3 Stanley Cups during his tenure along with being a fan favorite.
Another great option, but a long shot in my opinion, would be Andrew Shaw. Shaw was beloved by his teammates and fans here in Chicago. He earned the respect of everyone with his gritty style of play and his great personality. The only downfall to Shaw is that he is relatively new to television and may not have enough experience on camera to get a shot.
While the departure of Eddie Olczyk is going to sting for some time, there are numerous possibilities for who the next color commentator could be. I think that we will be in good hands with whoever earns the opportunity. Times are definitely changing in the windy city, whether we are prepared for it or not.
