The Blackhawks have been tanking all season long, aiming to win the draft lottery and have the privilege to draft Connor Bedard. On May 8, Chicago was jumping with joy as the Blackhawks netted the #1 pick, having the right to draft him.
With Connor Bedard being a Hawk on June 28, a question comes to mind. Being vital in his progression.
This is a big question. Will Bedard play in his first year? There are a lot of ways Davidson and his crew can approach this. You can keep him in the AHL for another year and have another year of tanking, aiming for the #2 pick as even with Connor on the team, this squad is nowhere near contention.
Plus, half the team is going to be gone this year, and the other half next year, if some of them don't get traded. Throw Bedard on the first line in Rockford and see what he can do. But some say our tanking is done, and I don't disagree.
The job is done, and it was a job well done. Another thing you can do is give him the Shane Wright treatment. Wright was selected 4th overall by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. For the start of the 2021-22 season, the Kraken had Wright play the first eight games, and they would decide from there what they were going to do with him. Seattle sent Wright down to the AHL to give him more time.
However, I think you give Bedard more than eight games to prove himself before you make a decision on him, and yes, I do think he should play at least the start of his first year as a Hawk.
