Alexander Ovechkin is still in pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's record, and when he inevitably does break the record will he retire? More importantly, where he will retire to.
The RMNB blog posted an interview from Russia, where Ovechkin plans on playing out the last two years of his contract with the Washington Capitals and retiring with the KHL's Dynamo Moscow.
Ovechkin began his professional hockey career with the KHL's Dynamo Moscow, playing 4 seasons there, before arriving in North America to play for the Washington Capitals.
He would return to the KHL to play with the team during the 2012 lockout and play 31 games and being able to play for his hometown team prior to retirement would have a sentimental value that can't be bought.
Ovechkin has all eyes on him, due to the fact he's chasing Wayne Gretzky's All-Time Goal record in the NHL, as he has 894, and Ovechkin isn't far behind with 853 career goals.
His career went into a little bit of a slump last season but would find his mojo again during the last half of the NHL season, scoring 31 goals.
If he can keep pace, he should easily break Gretzky's scoring record within the next two seasons.
Even if you're not a Washington Capitals fan, you can admire the skill and pure dominance Ovi has shown throughout his career, as a power-forward, with an amazing goal-scoring touch.
Even tallying 60 goals at one point in his career, and finally attaining the Stanley Cup in 2018. You have to respect the kind of career and name he's built for himself in the NHL.
He'll retire as one of the best to do it in the NHL, once he decides to hang up the skates.
