"Well, it was quite for awhile however it's not something that's just going to go away. The debate regarding the Chicago Blackhawks logo and name. Last night the Blackhawks statue was vandalized overnight which coincides with Indigenous Peoples' Day. It was later covered up with a tarp and a chain fence was placed around it. The Blackhawks released the following statement:«Over the weekend, the sculpture on Madison Street outside of the United Center was vandalized,» the spokesperson wrote in an email on Monday night. «It is currently under tarp for protection and will be sent off to be repaired in the near future.» Thanks to some digging by Scott Powers of The Athletic, a user on Twitter made a bit of statement, from Powers article:In a series of tweets Monday by an account named «no racist mascots» and with a Twitter handle of @zhigaagoong, photos and videos were shown of the Blackhawks' 75th-anniversary statue after it had been defaced at night and while it was being cleaned in the daytime. It appears red paint was poured over the Indian head logo and words were written on and around the statue. «Land back» was among the words written, which is a reference to a movement to restore Indigenous people's land and culture. The messages also included «Get Wirtz off board,» which is a reference to a protest of Blackhawks chairman Rocky Wirtz being on the Field Museum's board of trustees. «Decolonize Zhigaagoong» was also written, with «Zhigaagoong» being a word derived from the Anishinaabemowin language that refers to the territory now known as Chicago. Also written was, «fuck your advisory committee, Lori,» which is believed to be a reference to an advisory committed created by Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot to assess memorials, monuments and other art in Chicago after the city removed statues of Christopher Columbus. The @zhiagoong Twitter account appeared to have been created Monday and didn't overtly take credit for the acts.
