He announced that he was ending his 16-year career in the NBA at age 35, Rose was a key piece in the Chicago Bulls lineup in 2009.
He would earn an NBA MVP two years later in 2011, and eventually succumb to an ACL injury during the 2011-2012 season, during the playoffs.
Later Rose would suffer a torn meniscus, which would result in surgery two years afterward and reduce his time on the court.
«You gave me a gift, our time together, one that I will cherish for the rest of my days. You told me it's okay to say goodbye, reassuring me that you'll always be a part of me, no matter where life takes me.»
Rose played eight years of his career with the Chicago Bulls, and then became a journeyman in the league, playing for the New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Detroit Pistons during his NBA career.
Rose would finish his NBA career with the Grizzlies playing only 24 games this year.
Rose, was a bright spot during his time with the Bulls, despite never winning a championship with the team.
He did see post-season play with the Bulls once reaching the 2011 Easter Conference Finals once, with the team.
Rose could be considered only 2nd to Michael Jordan as one of the most important Bulls players in history, and it's unfortunate he was unable to deliver another championship in Chicago during his reign.
He's been known as a philanthropist, has had his own line of shoes with Adidas, and won an NBA MVP while LeBron James was in his prime.
Chicago's own son reached heights he'd never thought possible, and has now closed the books on his story in the NBA.
