Remembering Ron Ellis: A Toronto Maple Leafs Icon

The Toronto Maple Leafs mourn the loss of Ron Ellis, who passed away at 79. A lifelong Maple Leaf, Ellis spent his entire 16-year NHL career with the team.

He is remembered as one of only five players to play over 1,000 games for the Leafs and stands seventh in all-time team scoring.

Ellis played a big role in the Maple Leafs' 1967 Stanley Cup win, scoring 22 goals and totaling 45 points that season.

Following that victory, Ellis consistently topped 45 points for nine consecutive seasons, including a personal best of 61 points in 1974-75.

Ellis also represented Canada in the 1972 Summit Series against Soviet Russia, adding three assists to Canada's series win.

Though Ellis didn't win many individual NHL awards, he was a runner-up for the Calder Trophy in 1965 and received votes for the Lady Byng Trophy in 1979. His legacy was recently honored with the 2024 NHL Alumni Association 'Keith Magnuson Man of the Year' Award.

As we reflect on his remarkable contributions, our thoughts are with his family and the fans who admired him.
