This would be ideal for GM Kyle Davidson and the Blackhawks, but the Edmonton Oilers would have to begin the process.
Even as the salary cap will be rising in the NHL soon, the Edmonton Oilers have spent to the cap limit and will need relief. The Oilers and Blackhawks situation couldn't be further apart, as one team is in the Stanley Cup Finals, and one is a bottom-dwelling, 31st-ranking organization.
There will be roles available in the defense on the Blackhawks, as they will let their UFAs walk, from Nikita Zaitsev to Jarred Tinordi and Jaycob Megna, this could clear room to add another veteran defenseman. This could be a role, which Cody Ceci could fill.
While the team is rebuilding, they shouldn't shy away from adding veteran contracts and could benefit from Ceci's veteran presence, while the transition from the AHL to the NHL for some players continues. He could stabilize the blueline, while this occurs.
Ceci was unfortunately a healthy scratch for the Oilers during Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals. But he has been a staple in the Oilers' lineup as he's done things right, despite the fact the Oilers don't have anyone else to push him out of the lineup, during his 3-year tenure there.
Ceci could offer more help for the Blackhawks on the penalty kill and offers a physical presence on the ice needed.
He could help Wyatt Kaiser, Ethan Del Mastro and Isaak Philips and Nolan Allan ease into the NHL.
Cap space shouldn't be an issue, as the team needs to spend to get to the cap floor, at $32.9 Million, and Ceci's $3.4 Million AAV hit, should be able to be accommodated.
But GM Kyle Davidson should attempt to receive some sort of asset in a draft pick, or prospect or both in order to take on the Ceci contract.
