The soon to be restricted free agent makes $3.7 million and his production has tumulted to just 0.37 points per game. His first two seasons wearing a Hawks sweater he averaged 0.68 points per game.
He has just 12 goals, 13 assists in 68 games. It's not like he has not been given a chance to perform. He also had four goals, four assists in nine playoff games in 2019-20.
The good thing about his RFA status is that the Hawks have control over him, since he is still a RFA. If a team is interested in him, they must compensate the Hawks.
With the Hawks in a rebuild, which could take 3-5 years, draft picks become essential for the future of the team.
The problem with hoping to get say a second-round draft pick for Kubalik is his performance must pick up for the remainder of the season. He has picked things up a bit with one goal, two assists in his last five contests.
With Kubalik's RFA status, he is due a $4.4 million qualifying offer and so unless GM Kyle Davidson gets a good offer before the summer draft, they will let him walk.
It seems a shame that Kubalik didn't work out in Chi-town, but at the salary he will be due, it's time to move on to bigger and better things.
The Hawks will be making other moves, so stay tuned to hawksinsider.com for all the latest activity with the team!
