The 2022-23 World Junior camps have now started, giving countries a look at their young stars who will be ready to represent their country when the times comes. But why do elite prospects such as first overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky and others decline a invite to wear their countries colours? Well, fear of injuries, there is no salary earned during the World Juniors, the main idea is to rep your country, but at the same time if you were to get injured, it can slow down your development and progress on route to the NHL and potentially ruin your NHL career if the injury is serious enough.

A prime example of risking a injury and your NHL development is former 3rd overall pick and Chicago Blackhawk Kirby Dach, Dach accepted the invite to play for Team Canada and broke his wrist where he then needed multiple surgeries, slowing down his NHL development and not giving him extra time to develop- he ended up not living up to his 3rd overall expectations on Chicago.

Sadly, Blackhawks prospect Aidan Thompson has suffered a serious injury after taking a knee-on-knee collision with a teammate in scrimmage games, causing him to miss the entire tournament that has yet to even start. Thompson is a 20 year old who was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks 90th overall, and has put up impressive numbers as a youngin on various national and high-level rosters. Praying for a speedy recovery.
