During the current geopolitical conflict in Ukraine, Dominik Hasek has taken a controversial position. Ukrainian people have been given a voice by him and he wants the conflict to end.

Is there anyone who enjoys war? It is the NHL and the hockey world, however, that Hasek blames for hiring Russian players.

The Ukrainian Peoples Champion

Hasek, known for his polarizing remarks on the conflict, recently made a statement that many may consider absurd.

I understand that Hasek wants to motivate the IIHF, NHL and other worldwide hockey organizations to help end the conflict, but his latest suggestion may seem a bit ridiculous.

Recompense Through Sanction

For letting Russians play in the NHL, Hasek proposes that the NHL send Ukraine $2 to $4 billion dollars each year.

Having asked for Russian athletes to be banned from competition in 2022, this idea is not out of the ordinary for him.

In spite of it seeming as if no one has followed through, the IIHF has listened to him, and Russians have been banned from IIHF play, while cooperation between the NHL and KHL has been severely compromised.

Polarizing Figure

It is undoubtedly true that Hasek is acting in good faith and trying to assist innocent Ukrainians.

Perhaps, he could lobby to end the war on a bigger stage: The UN.

«not read or heard anywhere from [the organizations mentioned above] of an unequivocal condemnation of Russian aggression.»

However, the NHL released the following statement in late February: «The National Hockey League condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine and urges a peaceful resolution as quickly as possible. Effective immediately, we are suspending our relationships with our business partners in Russia and we are pausing our Russian language social and digital media sites. In addition, we are discontinuing any consideration of Russia as a location for any future competitions involving the NHL. We also remain concerned about the well-being of the players from Russia, who play in the NHL on behalf of their NHL Clubs, and not on behalf of Russia. We understand they and their families are being placed in an extremely difficult position.»
