The Pittsburgh Penguins off season started with a large scare when Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang were left unsigned, but things quickly shifted when Kris Letang re-signed for $6.1 million per season, and Malkin followed Letang's steps by signing a $6.1 million per season deal.

That leaves the Penguins with negative cap space, a whopping negative $1.5 million in the hole. How will they clear it!?

Well, one trade that was supposed to happen involved Penguins a penguins forward

Jason Zucker, as he holds a large cap hit of $5.5 million PER YEAR. It has been stated the team interested was a team in the Penguins division, the metropolitan division.

That trade involved Zucker and a first round pick, with the Penguins receiving 'future considerations'' as the return in the deal, as Zucker's $5.5 million cap hit is not something teams are entertained by.

Penguins general manager Ron Hextall stated it would be ideal to move that contract, but with the addition of the first round pick added in did not sit well with Hextall.

Although his offensive output has not been commensurate with his pay - Zucker has 23 goals and 24 assists in 94 games since coming over from the Wild - he skates well, works hard and is an effective forechecker who is liked and respected by his teammates.
