Like any organization or workplace, professional sports leagues must protect their workers from abuse or physical altercations. This holds for referees and linesmen, as they can bear the brunt of physical hits and accidental collisions.
It appears that this was not the case with the Swedish Hockey League, as Albin Lundin of Timra was handed a three-game suspension and a fine of 10,000 Swedish krona after tripping one of the linesmen during Thursday's game against Orebro.
The league released a statement on their view of what happened and the reason why they gave him a three-game suspension.
"The board finds that Albin Lundin was, in any case, indifferent to the collision with the linesman," the league wrote in their ruling. "It should also be noted that Albin Lundin did not even stop after knocking the referee to the ice or take any other notice of the incident."
After the game was complete, Lundin recounted what happened and gave his view.
"After the whistle blew, I looked up at the jumbotron to see what happened. I know I ran into the referee, but I wanted to see with how much force. After that, I went straight up to the official to apologize and tell him it wasn't on purpose. I apologized several times to the linesman."
"I just tried to move forward when I left the bench; I went straight forward the whole time. You can debate whether I should have seen him, absolutely, but I didn't."
Kimmo Kapanen, who is the sporting director of Timra, stated that he will file an appeal.
The Swedish Hockey League has suspended Timr's Albin Lundin for three games after tripping linesman Rickard Nilsson during Thursday's game against Örebro. Lundin has also been fined 10,000 Swedish Krona, which is approximately $913 US dollars.
