Despite facing the Maple Leafs and Auston Matthews, Arvid Soderblom would end up stopping Matthews' hot-streak as the Hawks defeated the Leafs by a score of 4-1.
A determined 4-1 victory over the Maple Leafs was led by Soderblom's excellent performance saving 36 of 37 shots. It may have been the goalie's defining moment in his career, his stabilizing force amid the chaos.
In one period alone, Soderblom had a great defensive support system that limited the Maple Leafs to just six shots. It wasn't just the excellent penalty kill that made the Blackhawks shine last night; it was the team's overall performance.
All three areas of the ice, including transition play, would continue to be dominated by the Blackhawks. In spite of the Leafs pulling Woll on ice, they outshot them 13-9 and even managed to hold them off despite a man advantage.
The team denied Matthews a chance to rack up a third consecutive hat-trick and any meaningful shots with all his time on ice.
Corey Perry, Taylor Raddysh, and Tyler Johnson contributed to the Blackhawks' tactical victory over the Maple Leafs.
