The Tampa Lighting and blueliner Victor Hedman have had quite the career together since he joined the team after being drafted in 2008, rising to the top with 2 Stanley Cups, a Norris trophy and a Conn Smythe award. There's one thing he's always wanted to do outside of hockey, own a soccer team. Now he finally has that chance.
Along with former teammate Ondrej Palat, Hedman is now a part owner of Plymouth Argyle, a third tier English soccer club playing in League One.
The pursuit in buying the club didn't happen right away, however it started this past season when Palat approached Hedman with the opportunity to be a part of the investment group vying to buy the team.
After speaking with Plymouth Argyle owner Simon Hallet, Headman sees the Lightning and Argyle taking a similar path to success.
It's tough to compare the two but what reminds me of us is they've got great ownership. The sustainability. They've been keeping the core together for quite a while. They finished seventh last year, but they haven't lost many players. Players want to stay there. They've got great building blocks. They keep bringing people in, younger guys from the Premier League. It brings that extra attitude. The fans, too. What I heard is that their home park is a very loud place and people go bananas. That kind of reminds me of Tampa
