There's been the official cause of death according to Sport-express,ru, as the former Winnipeg Jets draft pick, who spent the entirety of his career with the Ottawa Senators died at the age of 51.

The only words mentioned are "died suddenly":

"Filimonov died suddenly. The hockey player's funeral is scheduled for Monday."

Filimonov was taken in the 2nd round(49th overall) in the 1991 NHL draft, but would remain in Russia to play for Dynamo Moscow.

His rights would be traded to the Ottawa Senators, he would play 30 games with the Senators, scoring 5 points( 1 G, 4 A).

Filimonov would spend two seasons in the AHL with the Prince Edward Island Senators and would ship off to the Finnish Elite League. In 1997 he returned home to Russia and joined the Russia Super League, aka the KHL as we know it now with Perm Molot. He retired from professional hockey in 2006.

"Former Sens defenseman Dmitri Filimonov has reportedly passed away at age 52. Filimonov played 30 games for the team in '93-94."

In 1991 he would represent the Soviet National Team at the Canada cup, coincidentally the last time the game would be played.

This would also be the last time a USSR Hockey team played any event as the Soviet Republics would be dissolved later on that year.
