The Montreal Canadiens have good news and bad news about the Patrik Laine situation.

After the knee-on-knee contact, during Saturday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Cedric Pare collided with Laine, injuring the forward.

Arber Xhekaj would step in and make Pare pay for the transgression against, Laine in what should've been a suspension for the enforcer. Regardless, the code was in play that night.

The Habs today have given us an update on Patrik Laine's status, as we were unaware of the severity of the injury.

Fortunately, Patrik Laine has just suffered a knee sprain and will remain out of the lineup for two to three months.

It's a knee sprain, no surgery required. That's the good news. The bad news is that he will still be out for "two to three months."

This means the rebuilding team, will be without a key piece in the lineup, building chemistry and gelling with his linemates.

Laine looked good on the ice with Dach, but the trio still needed time, with Newhook adjusting to his linemates.

«I think we're pretty comfortable knowing that it's going to take time, but, at the same time, we don't want to just sit back and wait for it to happen naturally,» said Dach after Friday's on-ice session wrapped. «We want to push the issue and work on things and skate together in practice and in scrimmages and make sure that we're working on little details and understand where each others' timing and spacing is going to be.»

The Canadiens' second line won't be as lethal, without the forward's sniping ability and the Habs will have to look to the AHL's Laval Rocket in order to fortify the 2nd line.

Laine was acquired during the offseason from the Columbus Blue Jackets, for defenseman Jordan Harris and a 2nd round pick in the 2026 NHL draft.

Laine only played 18 games with the Blue Jackets last season, scoring 9 points( 6 G, 3 A) with a -10.

He has a fresh start in Montreal that has been abruptly cut short.
