The Ottawa Senators have made it known that they are looking to solidify their defense and add one to two defenseman to their back end. The Blackhawks will be sellers at the deadline and have multiple defensemen who could become available over the coming weeks.
While it's not confirmed which defensemen the Senators are targeting, there are three who stand out as favorites. The first is Jake McCabe. McCabe is having a career resurgence this season and has been the best Blackhawk on the ice more nights than not. McCabe would be a great fit on their blue line.
Another possible candidate could be Connor Murphy. Since coming to Chicago in the Hjalmarsson trade, Murphy has solidified himself as a cornerstone of the defensive unit. Murphy only carries a $4.4 million dollar cap hit through 2025-2026, so he is viewed as a long-term solution for any team that pursues a trade for him.
The last possible candidate is Ian Mitchell. This one is a little surprising because Mitchell is unproven compared to McCabe and Murphy's. With the Blackhawks juggling of the defensive pairings, Mitchell has conveniently been in the lineup both nights Dorion has been in attendance. Mitchell has 4 points in 13 games this season and has played better hockey as of late but is still in need of a change of scenery.
There will sure be movement by the deadline, but we will have to see who ultimately goes. All three of these defensemen are prime candidates to be moved, but which one will the Senators choose?
