ECHL tightens on fights as rule changes approved 2023-2024 season.
Rule changes are always a tough call for fans to deal with and understand. Some changes make complete sense, especially when they are intended to help prevent injuries, while others leave fans scratching their heads and wondering why such changes were made.
This applies to all leagues, including the ECHL, where the league has approved new rule changes for the 2023-2024 season.
One significant rule change aims to curb fighting in their games. Although I have not watched any ECHL games, this rule suggests that they may have had an issue with fighting.
In my opinion, fighting is part of the game and has a place in hockey, as long as it remains within reason. It remains to be seen whether the referees will have enough time to train for this new rule, as well as how the coaches will adjust their lineups accordingly.
Could a rule like this enter the NHL in the future? it's possible though I doubt it will happen. Fighting has dropped dramatically as skill and speed has entered the game. But we will wait and see if the NHL adopts something like this.
