The 25-year-old, a former player for the Flyers and Golden Knights, hasn't played since March 2022 due to persistent migraines. Patrick, drafted second overall by the Flyers in 2017, has now shifted gears, taking on a role as a skills coach with The Power Play, a hockey coaching program led by former NHL forward Jayce Hawryluk.
Patrick's career faced challenges, particularly with recurring concussions stemming from the 2016 WHL Playoffs.
A sports hernia during that time resulted in post-surgery complications, affecting his performance in the subsequent 2016-17 season with the Brandon Wheat Kings. Despite still showcasing skill with 20 goals and 46 points in 33 games, his trajectory hit a roadblock.
In 2019, the Flyers revealed Patrick's diagnosis of a migraine disorder, attributed to genetics rather than hockey-related factors. Despite attempts to return to the ice, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his plans, leading to his absence for the entire 2019-20 season.
Patrick's ongoing battle with migraines has now prompted his decision to step away from the NHL.
