Major Announcement: As a result of Adam Johnson's death, the first NHL team has mandated neck guards
After Adam Johnson's recent passing, teams in the NHL will have to reevaluate their safety standards.
There is one team that has taken immediate action to protect their players from neck injuries. This is a massive shift towards protection that hasn't been seen since helmets became mandatory.
Per Mike Sullivan, the Penguins will mandate neck protection for their AHL and ECHL teams.
No hard mandate can be made at the NHL level but they will heavily recommend such a measure.
First among the 32 NHL teams to mandate neckguards for their players was the Pittsburgh Penguins. AHL players are required to wear one, as is their ECHL affiliate, while NHL players are only recommended to do so.
Following the tragedy, this is likely to be the first step towards many professional hockey leagues mandating neckguards.
According to Mike Sullivan, an NHL mandate may not go into effect this season since it requires an off-season vote.
