This Blackhawks player has one of the worst contracts in the NHL
During the 2017-2018 season, Seth Jones was considered to be a top-tier defenseman for the Columbus Blue Jackets under coach John Tortorella's system.
Despite early predictions that he would eventually win a Norris Trophy, Jones never achieved this accolade.
Eventually, he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for a large return. Even though Jones was paid like a top defenseman in 2018, his performance declined over time.
In 2017-18, Seth Jones was one of the best defensemen on the planet. He scored 57 points and was on the ice for 57 percent of Columbus' goals at five-on-five all in tough minutes. He finished fourth in Norris voting as a 23-year-old and it felt like bigger things were on the horizon.
Despite signing a massive $9.5 million contract for what was considered his prime season, Jones has not been able to replicate the same level of production he had in Columbus, where he was on the ice for 57% of the team's 5v5 goals.
In order for his contract to be worth the investment, Jones and the Blackhawks will need to improve defensively and he will need to rediscover his former level of play from his days in Columbus.
According to The Athletic, his contract is the worst in the NHL and for now, they're not wrong.
