The Colorado Avalanche is confronting a challenging salary cap situation, which may result in parting ways with some players. One player who seems to be on the way out is Erik Johnson, a former Stanley Cup Champion and long-time member of the Avalanche.

Starting July 1st, Johnson will be exploring opportunities with other teams for the upcoming season. As the Avalanche rebuilds, experienced players are essential in guiding and mentoring the younger talents.

Johnson, with his postseason experience and Stanley Cup ring, would be a valuable asset in developing players.

Despite playing 63 regular-season games and 7 playoff games this season, Johnson had the lowest ice time of his career as a third-pairing defenseman. Additionally, he missed 19 games due to a broken ankle and has never completed a full 82-game season.

Considering his substantial $42 million extension beginning in 2016-2017, it is unlikely that he will be able to command a salary higher than the league minimum.
