After retiring, Gretzky decided to take a brief stint in coaching with the Phoenix Coyotes, which did not pan out well. Over the years since then, he has had the opportunity to watch players come into the league and build their careers, offering insight into whether they will be successful or not.
Recently, Gretzky spoke up about unrestricted free agent Max Domi, who ended up signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs for one year at $3 million. Many fans felt that Domi was worth more financially and should have been offered a longer term, possibly up to five years.
Gretzky explained that he wasn't surprised by the move, as he felt that Max wanted to follow in his father's footsteps with the Maple Leafs and that another lucrative deal would follow after this season.
He said,
The former Blackhawks winger became a fan favourite during his stay in the 2022-2023 season. However, he was traded to the Dallas Stars at the trade deadline to help them make a run for the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, the Stars failed in their bid, making him an unrestricted free agent.
During his time with the Hawks, he played 60 games, scoring eighteen goals with 31 assists for a total of 49 points, and accumulated 76 penalty minutes.
Max Domi's father, Tie Domi, was known for his aggressive checking style of play, and he will undoubtedly be proud to see his son wearing a Leafs jersey, as Tie spent 11 years with the team and became a legend in the blue and white.
