Over the years, there have always been quiet superstars in the NHL who amass many points and hardly get the accolades and recognition they deserve. Sometimes, it's due to another superstar who overshadows them, when in reality, that player helps them become the spotlight that's shone on them.
I feel that Nicklas Backstrom of the Washington Capitals is one of the more underrated centers in the league. He's the type of player who goes about his business and just makes things happen without any fanfare or constant attention.
Since he was drafted in the first round, 4th pick overall, in the 2006 entry draft, the 35-year-old center has been amazing in his talent and abilities. He has played his entire career with the Washington Capitals and has played 1097 games. He has scored 271 goals with 761 assists for 1032 points and is a +86.
He has one Stanley Cup to his name. Over the past few years, though, his health has plagued him and has knocked him down quite a bit in terms of production and overall availability in the NHL. He went under the knife in June 2022 to have his left hip resurfaced which can be quite painful.
He spoke in an interview recently with Elliot Siegel of Elliot in the morning. During the interview, he explained where he is in his health how his hip is holding up and whether he'd be ready for the beginning of this season or not.
"[My hip is] good, I'm kinda tired of that question. he also continued... I don't know how much better it's going to get."
His general manager, Brian MacLellan, explained his position on Backstrom's health and hopes that he will get back to business once the season begins.
«I think he's deserved a chance to see what he can do in the offseason and come into camp and see where he's at health-wise. It's a major surgery, so I don't know that anybody knows exactly where he's going to be.»
Only time will tell whether his hip will hold up to the rigour of the NHL season or if it could be greatly reduced if it flares up."
