Canadian Junior A hockey is embracing a significant alteration aimed at enhancing player safety.
New Face Shield Rule
In a notable shift, incoming players in the league are now mandated to wear face shields. Maritime Junior Hockey League's Pictou County Crushers defenseman Cam McKenzie confirms the change, particularly impacting rookies aged 16 and 17. Existing Junior A players receive an exemption, with those already in the league having the option to wear half face visors.

Transition and Concerns
While the new rule is introduced to reduce facial and eye injuries, Yarmouth Mariners' head coach Laurie Barron voices concerns. He anticipates potential injuries as players with full face masks may collide with those wearing half shields. Mike Field acknowledges the need for a transition period and emphasizes officials' role in ensuring a smooth adjustment.
Impact on the Mariners
The Yarmouth Mariners, amid their ongoing tryouts, anticipate a sizable group of first-year junior players opting for full face masks. The face shield requirement is a step toward safer play, and all Junior A players are expected to comply by 2025, signaling a unified commitment to player well-being.
