The Blackhawks selected center Frank Nazar with the 13th overall pick. Nazar is a flashy centerman known for his speed, high motor, and explosive offensive potential. Nazar is entering his freshman season for the University of Michigan and is looking to prove his worth to the Blackhawks with a breakout freshman season. Over his career in the juniors, Nazar has scored 370 points in 246 games.
When Kirby Dach was drafted, he also had an impressive run through junior hockey. Dach tallied 324 points in 260 games throughout junior hockey. While Dach's numbers may not be as flashy as Nazar's, Dach and Nazar share the same type of offensive skillset. Both players are playmakers with scoring potential, hard on the puck, and are not afraid to throw their body around. Nazar is definitely a faster skater than Dach and in my opinion, shows much more offensive potential.
There is no denying that Kirby Dach was rushed to the NHL and that was ultimately a big factor in his lack of development. While he was rushed to the NHL, Dach had numerous opportunities to prove himself, but he never seemed to be able to. Nazar is 18 years old and has a bright future ahead of him. While he is smaller than Dach physically, Nazar's skillset has a higher ceiling than what Dach had shown over his stint with the Blackhawks. I think this was a great move by Kyle Davidson that should result in brightening the Blackhawks future.
